Friday Freebies: Get Cultured!

There are some great museums down in Balboa Park here in San Diego. The museums have a regular schedule of free Tuesday admissions to different parks. Check out the complete Free Tuesday schedule here.

This month, you might check out the following museums for free then:

Designs for the Future

I’ve started doing some web/logo design with my friend Richard (a true renaissance man – M.Div from Princeton Seminary, graduate-level film studies, master’s in library science, web designer, husband, dad, street-baller). I’ve always enjoyed graphic design, and Richard is a very patient tutor, so I’m looking forward to seeing where this little venture leads us!

This week, I launched a redesign of the Ecclesia Collective site… I’ve been reworking a great theme called Linoluna. You can catch a glimpse below:

Old Partner, New Robots

First up, the first South Korean film to show at Sundance, Old Partner is a documentary about the unique bond between an elderly farmer and his cow. It might sound strange at first, but read the description below and watch the trailer for yourself. It looks like a lovely film…

Do I Like These?

Being a fan of Andy Samberg’s work (Lettuce, his work as Blizzy B), I was really excited to watch Hot Rod. While I enjoyed it the first time through, the more I think about some of the scenes, the more I appreciate their brilliance!

“Was that because of us?” + “Things started off super positive, then it just got crazy” + John Farnham’s You’re the Voice = Comedic gold

The Europe soundtrack, the whispy stache, “may your hammer be mighty,” the punch-kick at 1:35, “is that a throwing star?!”…

* * * * *

However, I’m not so sure about the new Nissan Cube.

I love me some boxy-looking cars, but there’s something about the asymmetric back window that screams, “No, seriously, we’re young and hip and with it. Kids these days love the wacky imbalanced look.” If I remember correctly, the Japanese version of the Cube I saw last year had normal windows. And I really liked that version.

The End of an Era (So Long BMG)

For those of us of a certain vintage, the BMG Music Club brings about certain fond memories. Twelve CDs for the price of one, you say? Where do I sign up? Even with the inflated price of shipping and handling it costs another three dollars to “handle” a half-once disc? really?), it ended up being a great way to collect music – and lots of it.

So, it was with a tinge of nostalgia and sadness that I read this NPR article about the end of the BMG music service:

Dear Music Lover,
We’d like to tell you about some upcoming changes to your membership. BMG Music Service is being discontinued as of June 30, 2009.

Sigh.

I actually still had a BMG wishlist floating around my old Word documents. Now, if I’m going to pick up 21 Singles from the Jesus and Mary Chain or Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco, I’m going to have to shell out retail.
