The month of May has been a bit of a whirlwind (but what’s new, right?).
A quick update on what’s burning up my bookshelf these days:
From a Liminal Place: An Asian American Theology, by Dr. Sang Hyun Lee
Dr. Lee is a pioneer in Asian American theology. I was fortunate to have studied in seminary under Dr. Lee and his wife (also a professor, Dr. Lee). From a Liminal Place is a powerful book, not only for Asian Americans, but for all who seek to follow Christ faithfully not from a seat of power, but from the creative, prophetic edges.
After Shock: Searching for Honest Faith When Your World is Shaken, by Kent Annan
Kent is a friend from seminary, and I won this book in a Twitter-related contest, but I would highly recommend After Shock even if neither of those were true. Kent is the co-director of Haiti Partners, a nonprofit “helping Haitians change Haiti.” After Shock searches, questions, seeks, even rages, toward real faith in the midst of brokenness.
One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow, by Scot McKnight
Sort of a Jesus Creed for daily life.
I appreciate Scot’s words about dreaming for the kingdom and the broad range of topics he covers in discussing a life of authentic discipleship. I will try to post a full review for this once I’m done reading it.
Generous Justice: How God’s Grace Makes Us Just, by Tim Keller
As the team from our church community prepares to join the work of Justice Ventures International in India to fight human trafficking and to work for hope, freedom, and restoration this summer, we’re reading Generous Justice together to help build a solid foundation. I always appreciate Keller’s wisdom, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it resonates with our team.
Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, by Eric Metaxas
Okay, so I’m not technically reading this one, but my wife is giving me a really great summary as she reads it!
I was not familiar with Bonhoeffer’s formative years early in his ministry, but reading (hearing) his insights from that time is deeply moving.
