The Next Evangelicalism: Freeing the Church from Western Cultural Captivity by Soong-Chan Rah, opens the door to hard conversations that we, as followers of Jesus, must no longer avoid.  Talking about race, reconciliation and idolatrous captivity of the church is uncomfortable but, if we are serious about redemption (both within and through the church) we must engage these sensitive issues.

I am increasingly exasperated by those who write off Soong-Chan as an “angry Asian man,” and nothing more.  In the introduction, Soong-Chan explains:

There are portions of the book that are intended to provoke. There may be times when the reader may react with anger, derision, defensiveness and so forth. But as you read through the major arguments of this book, I hope you will find my deepest concern for the church, the body of Christ… The true intention of the book is to bring reconciliation and renewal to the church in America.

Just returned from a quick trek out to Long Beach for The Idea Session at WFX hosted by Charles Lee and The Idea Camp.  I can’t say enough about the collaborative, creative ethos Charles and The Idea Camp foster — so much hope & inspiration to go and demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.

Tonight, we heard from Tony Kim of Newsong, Eric Bryant of Mosaic, and Mel McGowan of Visoneering about, “The Ethos of Creativity.”  Great insights all around from everyone and, in Idea Camp style, plenty of interaction from everyone who was there.  You can read my first attempt at a true live blog about The Idea Session here at Scribble Live.

The Freeze Project San Diego video is now online!

Today, there are over 27 million people trapped in slavery and human trafficking — more than at any other time in human history.  The US State Department estimates between 600,000-800,000 women, children, and men are trafficked across international borders each year. Approximately 80% are women and girls and up to 50% are minors.

And yet, so many people are unaware of this global nightmare.  Through The Freeze Project, we are raising awareness for those trapped in this terrible injustice.  Join the movement and raise your voice for freedom!

Special thanks to Shirley Hwang for spearheading The Freeze Project San Diego movement and to Joe Baek for filming and editing the video.

Eugene Cho, at The Idea Camp, described the origin of his conviction to start One Day’s Wages. While the family was watching television, one of those ads with starving kids came on. One of Eugene’s children asked him if that was real and, after finding out that it was, asked him, “What are you going to do about it?”

Today our church community helped kick off the LiNK (Liberty in North Korea) Crossing movie tour.  Crossing is based on true stories of North Korean refugees and the horror they’ve endured.  We were extremely fortunate to hear from LiNK’s founder, Adrian Hong, about what motivated him to begin LiNK.  You can learn more about the ongoing human rights crisis in North Korea here, but as Adrian shared, statistics and facts don’t convey how bad things are there.  Human trafficking, concentration camps, forced prostitution, famine, torture, murder… and on and on.

San Diego area friends,

I’m so glad to announce that The Freeze Project is coming to San Diego!  In short, The Freeze Project is a creative and simple way to raise awareness about the 27 million people currently enslaved worldwide. Participants will “freeze” in place for 5 minutes and then interact with people who are interested, giving out a flyer with information about human trafficking and raising awareness.

Here’s the rundown:

The Freeze Project has already taken places in cities like Santa Monica, Anaheim and Glendale, CA, Seattle, WA and even in London (yes, that one in the UK!).  We’d love to have a great turnout in San Diego, especially since SD is a border town with lots of human trafficking issues.

Spread the word and raise your voice to help unlock freedom for those frozen in slavery worldwide!
