I have written a new piece over at Relevantmagazine.com, Mother Teresa and the Experience of Doubt. It is strange to think of the well-known as actual human beings. One of my favorite passages from The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne is the one in which he describes his phone conversation with Mother Teresa. Shane writes about how, in his pursuit of living out his faith in Jesus with abandon and authenticity, he wrote to Mother Teresa to seek an “internship.” Through a bit of detective work, he was able to place a phone call to directly to the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta:

So I got the digits for Mother Teresa… we called at 2 a.m. from the pay phone in our college lounge. It began ringing. I was expecting to hear a formal greeting, “Missionaries of Charity, how can we help you?” Nope. I just heard an old raspy voice on the other end mutter, “Hullo.” Thinking I had the wrong number in Calcutta with the tab rolling at four dollars a minute, I started railing: “Hi-I’m-calling-from-the-USA-trying-to-reach-Mother-Teresa… I’m wanting to visit.” On the other end, I heard the muffled voice say, “This is the Missionaries of Charity. This is Mother Teresa.” My initial reaction was, “Yeah right, and I’m the pope.” But I held back. I told her we had written and wanted to come work with her… She said, “No, come for the summer. Come.” Come? Where would we eat and sleep? … She didn’t worry a lot about that. She said, “God takes care of the lilies and the sparrows, and God will take care of you. Just come.” Who am I to argue with that? I thanked her, and we hung up.

On June 20, 2007 the Simple Way community center in Philadelphia was destroyed — along with much of the neighborhood — in a massive fire. According to the latest news on the Simple Way site, it looks like they could use some people who are looking to pursue Christ with abandon and authenticity in their rebuilding efforts — in particular, roofers, carpenters and plumbers. If you’re in the area and can lend a hand, I’m sure they could use your help. Even if you’re not in the area, sending gift cards from Home Depot or Lowe’s would help purchase some of the tools they need in the rebuilding process.

The final seven South Korean hostages in Afghanistan have been freed and are on their way back home!

May we continue to pray for these followers of Christ, their families, their church and for those who perpetrated these evil acts. In particular, pray for their church which, although this should be a time of great joy, has been issuing apologies and has been unfairly criticized by many inside and outside of South Korea.

Much respect to Eugene Cho for cutting through the media silence and becoming a voice and advocate for these followers of Christ, for his wise insights, and for calling the Church to sincere prayer throughout the last six weeks.

Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy.

The headline of the September 3, 2007 issue of Time magazine made me hold my breath for a moment: “The Secret Life of Mother Teresa.” In this day & age, scandal among leading figures of faith is nothing new — but Mother Teresa?

Well, as it turns out, her “secret” is that she suffered a crisis of faith. I suppose in a culture where Mother Teresa is more of a cultural archetype than an actual human being, the fact that she struggled — mightily, at times — in her faith would be a shocking “secret” worthy of an expose. I would never wish a dark night of the soul upon anyone. The pain, the emptiness, the grief — these things can almost tear a person apart. But I find myself oddly reassured that Mother Teresa was a real human being, with very real questions, doubts and struggles. It gives me hope that, by the grace of God, I can become the person God intends for me to be. As Eugene Cho writes in his post about this article:

While I have joy in my convictions as a believer of God and follower of Christ, I am not afraid to call Mystery and Doubt my friends and acquaintances. They have accompanied my journey for some time…and have actually strengthened my walk with Christ.

It is almost human nature to love the idea of a person more than the physical human being in front of us. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that is a large part of why many relationships fail — we develop this idealized version of our beloved that can only lead to disappointment and failure. I love this quote from Bonhoeffer’s Life Together:

Those who love their dream of a Christian community more than the Christian community itself become destroyers of that Christian community, even though their personal intentions may be ever so honest, earnest and sacrificial.

Even though I’ve been serving in a first-generation immigrant church context for awhile now, I still struggle with understanding the Asian idea of saving face. At times, it feels like we are willfully misleading people in order to maintain the dream of the community, as opposed to entering the messy reality of one another’s lives. It’s safer and simpler to keep each other at arm’s length. But what costs so little yields a similarly cheap result.

I have really struggled over the last couple of weeks because of the circumstances of a family we know. The husband and wife have been contemplating divorce — difficult in any circumstance, but made even stickier in a first-generation immigrant setting. On top of that, the husband works for their church as a member of the first-generation staff. Unfortunately, their resolution seems to be sending off the husband to another country for “mission” work. This ridicules not only the sanctity of marriage, but also the calling to cross into another culture and serve in the name of Christ. The frightening thing is that I’m sure many of us could repeat almost verbatim the same story from our own church experience — it’s not love that covers over a multitude of sins, but a holy facade.

What would happen in the Asian American church if we acknowledged, and entered into, the mess of one another’s lives? We might have to fight our inner Homer Simpson shouting “Too much infor-mation!” and deal with the awkwardness of actually getting to know each other, but isn’t it worth it? The mess could become beautiful if we lived in it together. David Gate has written a couple of posts urging the church to move beyond mere functionality in songwriting and McWorship and towards creativity, awe and wonder. David has written many incredible worship songs. His song, “Led to the Lost,” includes one of my favorite lines in any song (“worship” or otherwise) — As we follow Your heart, we are led to the lost.

His most recent album, Unapproachable Light, is well worth picking up, particularly if you’ve had enough of the radio-ready, adult contemporary, borderline-country, “modern” praise songs that fill the shelves at the local Christian bookstore. David writes:

Today it is possible to walk into a church in Sydney or London or Dallas or Vancouver or Johannesburg or Phuket or Sao Paulo or Helsinki or Belfast or almost anywhere that is connected to the rest of the world, and to sing the same songs. And more than that, to sing them in the same way. The music has resembled little else but Middle of the Road, American, radio friendly hits. It is full of common denominators, not a crime on its own, but its exclusion of other forms is concerning.

While I have experienced first-hand the joy of worshiping together with believers in faraway places through common songs (singing “Shout to the Lord” in a bamboo hut in a tiny Philippine village — in English, no less), I find it hard to believe that there are no songwriters who can express what God is doing in their particular community. I just met a pastor here in Dallas who spent close to three years in Russia, reaching out to college students. He shared about how amazing it was to sing the same songs with them (translated into Russian, this time) and how connected he felt to the global body of Christ. I believe it is important to have world-wide anthems that proclaim God’s renown to the ends of the earth. But I also believe that there are certain things that God is doing in local gatherings that can only be expressed through new songs rising up from these communities.

This is not only an issue for the global church — this relates directly to what is happening in many Asian American churches today. I can’t think of a single Asian American church I have encountered that did not have either a youth or English-speaking adult worship band. Most often, these churches have both. And yet, there has been a conspicuous lack of songwriting. Usually, we end up with a really great sounding cover band.

David Park tackled some of these issues in his post, “The Search for Asian American Worship.” I would love it if we could express something of our unique context in our music — I don’t know what that might look like, but what a glorious sound that would be! At this point, though, I would be satisfied with any songwriting. I have encouraged many students to write their own songs, but their fear of failure (truly Asian American youth) and lack of role models kept them from really pursuing this.

I’m not advocating a ban on Hillsong United or Chris Tomlin songs in our churches, though this could potentially yield some incredible results. We live in a time of unprecedented availability of worship resources and we would be foolish not to tap into them. But it seems like it would be a more faithful response from our churches if we balanced this use of outside songs with songs that rise up from the hearts of our people in our specific setting. Or, as DM says, we need to, “get the balance right.”

Incidentally, I was this close to purchasing this t-shirt until my wife reminded me how off-putting it would be to see a big guy like me walking around in a DM shirt. Next thing you know, she’s going to be rescuing me from mowing the lawn in a sleeveless undershirt, shorts, dark socks and slippers. So much trauma for so many Asian American youth, and all from how their dads dressed!

The artists from Mothership have produced a breathtaking public art installation in Rotterdam. In their own words:

On May 14th 1940 the city of Rotterdam was bombed. The bombs and especially the fire that followed reduced its centre to smoldering ashes.

Already during the war it was decided that the destroyed buildings wouldn’t be rebuild, but that Rotterdam would be turned into a new, modern city.

For Rotterdam 2007 – City of Architecture, the border indicating the destroyed area will be marked with huge spotlights. Each light has a capacity of 7000 watts. The invisible border will be shown in a spectacular way!”

This project immediately call to mind the “Tribute in Light” project in New York city, in which artists created two towers of light from a cluster of searchlights where the fallen towers once stood.

These projects bear silent witness to the symbolic power of light that cuts through darkness. They inspire hope, even wonder, in their viewers. Could this be what Jesus meant when talked about cities and hills, and lamps and bowls? Sometimes, we reduce the idea or “shining” for Jesus to that one Sunday a year when we roll out the little ones in front of the congregation to sing “this little light of mine.” Sometimes our light is more like that of an overzealous police officer holding a Maglite at head level and peering menacingly into the law-breaking sinner’s car: “Do you know why I’ve singled you out tonight, sir?” says the Christian SWAT team.

What if our light cut through darkness, offering a breathtaking glimpse into the kingdom, inspiring hope and wonder at the sight of such life within us?
