Husband and wife combo, Viva Voce, have this great song called “Mixtape=Love” on their album The Heat Can Melt Your Brain. As a child of the 80s, I remember fondly the days of making and trading mixtapes with friends. I think I can trace my interest in graphic design back to these mixtape days of literally cutting and pasting together ‘zine-like cassette tape cover art. Make your own mixtape image here! Below, you can find my current playlist/mixtape (or click here for my mixtape archive):

My friend Jason Evans has been putting together a series of guest mixtapes over on his blog (which I highly recommend). I was stoked when J asked if I’d like to join in, and November is my turn to play DJ at Notes from the Land Under a Perfect Sun. Here’s my mixtape and the concept behind it:
Most of the time, when making a mixtape, I like to have a theme. Is it too general to say that this mixtape’s theme is “Stuff I Like”? Mixtapes have a certain ebb & flow, and this one wanders through bands and songs that have influenced me, changed the way I thought about music, and caused plenty of people stare at me as I sing along at top volume while driving down the road. Many of these songs are surefire dance party-starters in our house when we’re doing the dishes.
- Fugazi – “Merchandise”
- Quicksand – “How Soon is Now?”
- New Order – “Your Silent Face”
- Crystal Castles & Robert Smith – “Not in Love”
- Seam – “Rafael”
- My Bloody Valentine – “Only Shallow”
- Slint – “Good Morning, Captain”
- Battles – “Leyendecker”
- Drive Like Jehu – “Atom Jack”
- Les Savy Fav – “The Sweat Descends”
- Superchunk – “Driveway to Driveway”
- Dirty Projectors & David Byrne – “Knotty Pine”
- Animal Collective – “My Girls”
- Sigur Ros – “Hoppipolla”
- Sufjan Stevens – “Holy, Holy, Holy”

mmmm souvlaki space station….what a fantastic song and band
Ryan — Yes, shoegazing forever!
